Harrison Medical Center now offers a new CardioPulmonary Rehabilitation (CPRehab) program for Phase 2 and Phase 3 patients as part of its full line of cardiovascular services.
WHAT IS CPRehab?
Your physician will refer you for cardiac rehabilitation if you’ve experienced angina, had a heart attack, recently undergone bypass surgery or a cardiac stenting, had heart valve surgery, suffer from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), or have other cardiac and pulmonary conditions.

The CPRehab team will work together with you and your physician(s) to reduce chest pain, increase your endurance and strength, help you manage your stress, and improve your health to decrease the risk of future heart problems.
By combining monitored exercise (for heart rhythm and oxygenation), education, and learning new lifestyle choices, your cardiac rehabilitation program begins immediately following your inpatient procedure and continues through to a daily maintenance program that can be supervised or on your own, depending on your preference.
TRAINING + EDUCATION = SUCCESS
The CPRehab team will partner with you to improve your quality of life. We’ll use exercise training for your body with medically safe physical conditioning and education to help you make healthy life choices.
By creating customized exercise plans built around your specific needs, interests, and activities, you’ll have the best chance to successfully meet your goals.
Our team of medical professionals will take the time to counsel and educate you to help you better understand your disease processes and to reduce your risks for future problems. That way, you’ll have the tools you need to make the right choices for your best health. To further help you be successful, we invite your family members to join this process.
WHAT ARE THE PHASES OF CPRehab?
The CPRehab program has three phases designed to meet your needs from the time you’re in the hospital through your rehabilitation and continuing into the maintenance phase of your cardiac and pulmonary health. Here’s how it works:
Phase 1: Inpatient rehabilitation
Immediately following your surgery or hospital stay, Harrison’s occupational and physical therapists, along with CPRehab staff, will work with you to get you back on your feet and caring for yourself. They’ll focus on the basics: sitting up, getting in and out of bed, walking, bathing, dressing, and other personal needs. In Phase 1, we want to help you become mobile enough and knowledgeable enough to function independently in your own home to speed your recovery. A large portion of Phase 1 is focuses on educating you on risk factor modifications and what to expect.
Heart and Vascular Center Launches Phase 1 Cardiac Rehab
As most of you know, one of the many strengths of Harrison’s HVC is the post-hospital patient programs we offer. Appropriately named CPRehab, post-discharge patients work with exercise physiologist and registered nurses to regain stamina and strength and improve overall health through exercise and education. Phase 2 rehab is held at HMC in Bridgeview and Phase 3 rehab uses the Haselwood Family “Y” in Silverdale facilities. Patients can also participate in Maintenance-type programs at any number of community-based facilities. On June 4 the Rehab and Cardiopulmonary Rehab teams collaborated to launch Harrison’s new phase 1 CPRehab program, designed to help inpatients begin their road to heart health and recovery by supporting them with education and lifestyle teaching and working collaboratively with the Physical and Occupational Therapy services. Not just for STEMI patients, this program is also for cardiac patients who have stable angina, received stents, and/or have had bypass or valve surgery. We know this will be yet another great resource for Harrison’s patients and look forward to expanding the exceptional care provided here at Harrison.
Phase 2: Outpatient monitored rehabilitation
You’ll work with the CPRehab staff on a monitored exercise regimen created to meet your specific needs. Phase 2 generally begins soon after leaving the hospital upon referral by your physician. Exercise may begin before you are released from upper body precautions, as this is most beneficial for your recovery process. Your personalized program will be based on your physician’s recommendations, your fitness level, CPRehab staff guidance, and will advance as you continue to recover.
In CPRehab, you’ll work together with your healthcare team to gradually increase your level of physical activity by learning difference kinds of exercises to promote cardiovascular and pulmonary health, strength, flexibility, and balance. Your team, including experienced nurses and exercise physiologists, carefully will oversee your activities and monitor your heart.
In addition, you’ll receive education and tools to help you make the right choices to improve your quality of life and keep your cardiovascular health on track. You’ll learn about topics such as nutrition, medication, exercise/physical activity, weight management, risk factors, anatomy and disease process, smoking cessation, breathing techniques, energy conservation, diabetes, and stress management.

Phase 3: Outpatient maintenance
After completing Phase 2, CPRehab patients are strongly encouraged to join an exercise program to maintain their new levels of cardiac and pulmonary health. Making the healthy choices you’ve learned in CPRehab Phase 2 an integral part of your life will give you the best chance for a successful recovery. Your newfound knowledge of exercise, nutrition, and other lifestyle choices can become healthy, lifelong habits.
The CPRehab team can assist you in finding a Phase 3 location that matches your healthcare needs and life interests. We want to help you meet and keep your personal goals for health and well-being.
A strong support network also is an integral part of your recovery and maintenance. We invite your family members and friends to join you in the maintenance phase of your program.
Phase 3 locations (CPRehab)
At these two locations, a CPRehab staff member will be available during scheduled open gym times to guide you through warm-ups, take pre- and post-workout blood pressure measurements and pulse oximetry readings, and supervise your exercise as needed.

Bremerton Family YMCA

Participating in CPRehab’s Phase 3 maintenance at the YMCA does not require a YMCA membership. However, we hope our patients consider membership so that they may take advantage of the entire range of YMCA health and wellness offerings.
With a YMCA membership, you’ll be able to use the self-serve blood pressure machine and have access to a special computer station—called ActivTrax®—that can help monitor and advance your workouts. ActivTrax® will allow you to print new workouts on each visit to track your progress.
The YMCA also offers a wide array of services and free classes to their members, such as:
For CPRehab patients, the joining fee at the Haselwood Family YMCA and the Bremerton Family YMCA will be waived and income-based financial consideration given to those in need.
Phase 3 locations (non-CPRehab)
CPRehab supports the efforts of other local healthcare facilities that provide space and supervision for Phase 3 maintenance. These additional locations will make maintenance exercise accessible and convenient for more patients. Some facilities also may offer separate membership programs with additional benefits and services.
