The words. "I Can't" simply are not in the vocabulary of 18 year old Olympic College student , Erica Runyan. She has been raising money for children’s charities for more than two years. To date she has raised over $6,000 for charities such as Children’s Miracle Network and Seattle Children’s Hospital. Her fundraisers include Dinner For The Kids Baked Ziti Sale, the annual Miracle Trail Run 5k & Letters From Santa. Last year, while brainstorming ideas to get more Kitsap residents involved and raise awareness, she decided to take a huge leap of faith and plan a community pasta feed and auction, something she had never done before. The idea came from her immensely popular Baked Ziti sale in which she personally made and sold 100 pans of Italian Baked Ziti and raised $1,000 for Children’s Miracle Network. Her customers are still asking for more of her baked ziti.
Runyan's passion for children’s charities is not a passing fad. She has her sights set on a nursing degree, specializing in neonatology. She is currently a pre-nursing student at Olympic College. Runyan said, "I'll never forget when my aunt (a neonatal nurse) took me into the neonatal unit at her hospital in North Carolina. Those tiny babies struggling for life captured my heart. It was then that I found out that Children's Miracle Network had purchased many of the incubators being used and they were paying the bills for some of the babies." Raising money for CMN and other children’s charities has become a daily focus for Erica. She also volunteers around Kitsap with Kitsap Youth in Action, United Way and several other groups.
