The cardiac diagnosis and treatment tools your heart requires are right here at Harrison Medical Center—cardiac catheterization labs, a peripheral vascular lab, an electrophysiology lab, interventional cardiology, and nearly three dozen invasive and noninvasive heart and vascular procedures. Our quality care continues with individualized recovery and rehabilitation programs, education, and support.

Timely intervention
Heart care at Harrison frequently begins with a visit to our nationally renowned Emergency Department. In this Level III trauma center, our “pit crew” rapidly assesses and treats those suspected of having a heart attack. Our highly skilled care team can rescue your heart muscle quickly. We perform lifesaving balloon angioplasty or coronary intervention (door-to-balloon time) in less than 60 minutes—more than 30 minutes faster than the recommended national goal.

Open-heart surgery
The gold standard of clinical excellence in heart care is three stars. Harrison Medical Center’s award-winning cardiothoracic surgery program has achieved this highest category of quality by The Society of Thoracic Surgeons for overall performance.
The three-star rating—designated for the data reporting period of July 1, 2008 to December 31, 2009—puts our program in the top 10 percent of nearly 900 hospitals across the nation.
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons’ three-star rating is a composite score that represents new standards in the assessment of clinical performance. Eleven of 21 National Quality Forum measures are included to determine the composite score. Those 11 are divided into four domains:
Our highly successful outcomes are the result of advanced technology and a team of experts—from board-certified cardiothoracic surgeons to board-certified and TEE-certified cardiac-trained anesthesiologists to specially trained nurses—who have:
In the rare instance that a patient requires complex specialty surgical services—such as a heart transplant—we facilitate care through our unique collaboration with UW Medicine Regional Heart Center, the centralized heart and lung resource for the Pacific Northwest.

Vascular surgery
Our specialists treat all the veins and arteries that make up the vascular system, except the cranium and heart. They are able to care for patients using sophisticated treatments from noninvasive diagnostic tests to minimally invasive procedures to complex surgeries by board-certified vascular surgeons.
Recovery
Harrison’s Intensive Care and Progressive Care units provide the high level of care and attention you need throughout your stay to support your full recovery. Because we believe that families play a role in healing, we welcome them at the bedside, as well as during our patient education and follow-up support.
Holter monitoring
A Holter monitor is a continuous tape recording of a patient's EKG (or heart rhythm) for 24 hours. Holter monitors can be worn during your regular daily activities and helps the physician match symptoms of dizziness, palpitations (a sensation of fast or irregular heart rhythm) or blackouts with the heart rhythm.
Since the recording covers 24 hours on a continuous basis, Holter monitoring is much more likely to detect an abnormal heart rhythm when compared to the EKG, which lasts less than a minute. It also can help evaluate the patient's heart during episodes of chest pain, during which time there may be telltale changes to suggest ischemia (pronounced is-keem-ya) or reduced blood supply to the muscle of the heart.
Much like standard electrocardiography (ECG), the Holter monitor records electrical signals from the heart via a series of electrodes attached to the chest. The number and position of electrodes varies by model, but most Holter monitors employ between three and eight. These electrodes are connected to a small piece of equipment that is attached to your belt, and is responsible for keeping a log of the heart's electrical activity throughout the recording period.
Harrison offers Holter monitoring through our partner cardiology groups at Kitsap Cardiology Consultants and The Doctor’s Clinic.
